About Macquarie University Hospital

Macquarie University Hospital provides the most sophisticated patient care in the Asia-Pacific region. It’s Australia’s first and only private hospital on a university campus, and the first hospital in Australia to introduce fully digital patient records. This highly confidential digital system enables patients’ entire records to be accessed by authorised staff from any computer anywhere in the hospital.

Advanced general and cardiology-specific technology

Macquarie University Hospital gives cardiology patients access to an array of advanced technologies, including a full range of radiology and imaging services (housed in their own radiation bunker) and the on-site Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology lab – the largest private pathology facility in Australia – for fast, on-site testing.

In addition, the state-of-the-art cardiac facility includes a 10-bed dedicated Coronary Care Unit (CCU), along with joint use of a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), general cardiology ward, cardiac catheterisation and electrophysiology laboratories, as well as cardiothoracic operating theatres and angiography suites.

As well as the full gamut of non-interventional diagnostic testing – such as echocardiography (ECG), stress ECG, exercise and pharmacologic stress echo testing, and cardiac device assessments – cardiac CT and cardiac MRI along with the full spectrum of nuclear cardiology services are also available.

Gamma knife

The only gamma knife in Australia – which is a non-invasive neurosurgical tool for treating brain cancer and a range of other brain-related disorders, and some vascular surgery.

Despite its name, there is no cutting involved - around 200 beams of radiation converge with high accuracy, permitting intense doses of radiation to be delivered safely to a small target such as a tumour.

Da Vinci surgical robot

The most extensive robotic surgery program in Australia, with the country’s second Da Vinci surgical robot, enables the Heart Care Centre to to perform lobectomies and to provide minimally invasive treatment options for a range of cardiothoracic conditions, including mitral valve disease and coronary artery disease (CAD). In the future, Sydney Heart & Lung Surgeons aim to perform fully closed mitral valve replacement and coronary artery bypass.

The robotic angiography device is housed in the Artis zeego hybrid theatre, and is particularly relevant for very ill or elderly patients who can’t withstand open-heart surgery. The minimally invasive approach means that patients often have significantly less bleeding, and shorter recovery times.

Artis zeego hybrid theatre

The Artis zeego hybrid theatre is the first of its kind in Australian and was installed to enable vascular surgeons and radiologists to carry out highly complex procedures such as vascular surgery for aortic aneurysms, without the need for open chest or abdominal surgery.

The Artis zeego hybrid theatre uses a robotic multi-axis C-arm to provide users with maximum flexibility in the floor-mounted X-ray system. This gives surgeons the image detail they need in one system, without having to transfer patients from X-ray to the interventional suite.

Onsite cyclotron

An onsite cyclotron that manufactures short-acting isotopes used during cardiac PET (positron emission tomography) scans. Because short-acting isotopes are true perfusion agents both stress and rest imaging can be performed in a relatively short time.

This is a major advantage over SPECT/CT, which requires about two to three hours between stress and rest, which in turn increases the total procedure time. By utilising PET/CT, blood flow quantifications can be produced much more effectively and reproducibly, ultimately giving better image quality and better visualisation.
