As well as a full range of non-invasive testing, electrophysiology and peripheral vascular services and cardiothoracic surgery, the Heart Care Centre also provides best-prepared surgical practice to handle procedures that may be complex or complicated by underlying illness or age including TAVI, MitraClip and advanced heart failure.

While these ground-breaking procedures are happening overseas, and in some of the major Australian public hospitals, they are relatively new in Australian private hospitals.

These advanced procedures are delivered by an on-site, multi-disciplinary team of cardiologists, electrophysiologists, interventional cardiologists, cardio thoracic surgeons and vascular surgeons. This team often expands to include immediate care from on-site physicians from every medical specialty required.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is used to treat severe aortic valve stenosis, the most common valvular heart disease in developed countries. Without surgery, the prognosis is extremely dismal, which is why there is general agreement that surgical aortic valve replacement should be offered to patients with symptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis.

However, conventional open-heart surgery is denied to about 30-40% of elderly patients with severe, symptomatic aortic stenosis due to high perioperative risk. In this situation, minimally invasive TAVI is an effective treatment alternative for this type of patient.

The TAVI procedure is performed using the Edwards Sapien Transcatheter Heart Valve (THV), an artificial heart valve designed to be inserted into the heart so that it holds open and replaces the diseased aortic valve. It consists of a metal stent (made of steel or cobalt-chromium) that secures the device inside the valve, and valve leaflets (made of biological material derived from cows) to direct the flow of blood out of the heart.


Percutaneous mitral valve repair is expanding treatment options for patients suffering from the debilitating symptoms of mitral regurgitation (MR).

MR is a condition in which the heart's mitral valve leaflets do not close tightly. When this happens, blood flows backward from the heart's left ventricle into the left atrium. The heart must then work harder to push blood through the body, which can cause fatigue, shortness of breath and worsening heart failure.

The MitraClip System is the first device available to safely perform percutaneous mitral valve repair. It’s minimally invasive and uses catheter-based technology; no cardiopulmonary bypass is required.

MitraClip allows for real-time positioning and repositioning to optimise mitral regurgitation reduction. It’s designed to preserve surgical options and has been shown to reduce MR, reverse left ventricular remodelling, improve NYHA functional class, and improve quality of life.


Advanced heart failure


Medical care for heart failure (HF) includes a number of nonpharmacologic, pharmacologic, and invasive strategies to limit and reverse the manifestations of heart failure.

Advanced heart failure treatment at the Heart Care Centre includes assessing and managing patients with severe left and right ventricular failure using inotropes, mechanical circulatory support with ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), VADs (Heartware, Thoratec, Abiomed, Levitronix devices) and IABP (Intra-aortic balloon pump). We also manage acute and chronic pre and post cardiac transplant patients.

Non-invasive testing

Including stress echocardiography, echocardiography, Holter monitor studies, ambulatory blood pressure studies, coronary calcium score, dobutamine stress echo, electrocardiogram and event monitor recording. Cardiac catheterisation including coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty, CT coronary angiogram, and transoesophageal echocardiogram.


Including diagnostic electrophysiology studies, ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac device implantation including pacemakers and defibrillators, and follow up of implanted cardiac devices.

Peripheral vascular services

Including renal and lower-limb angioplasty, ankle brachial index and SphygmaCor® central blood pressure testing.

Cardiothoracic surgery

Including coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CAGS), off-pump coronary artery bypass procedure and heart valve surgery.
